Several years after her modest screen-debut, Francesca Bertini, born Elena Seracini Vitiello in Naples, probably reached the peak of her career with the role of Assunta Spina (1915), in the feature film based on the homonymous novel by Salvatore Giacomo (and co-directed with Gustavo Serena).
Released in the same year, La Signora dalle Camelie assured the success of the Serena/Bertini collaborations, milking every bit of charisma from gorgeous stars and miraculously steering the high voltage melodramatics into this exquisitely filmic prose that is almost mythopoetic. An orgy of fin-de-siècle values, this film achieves the ultimate intensity, and the complexity of Black Romanticism, in which happiness must be followed and inevitably sublimed by pain.

Description: text by the original uploader, Lubitsch@kg:

Star Pola Negri and director Ernst Lubitsch, who created an international sensation with the German superproduction DuBarry, Woman of Passion, were reunited in the frothy Hollywood comedy/drama Forbidden Paradise. Negri is cast as Catherine, the Czarina of an unnamed but very Russian-looking country. Rescued from revolutionaries by dashing Captain Alexis Czerny (Rod LaRocque), Catherine "repays" the Captain in the boudoir. Czerny falls madly in love with the Czarina, only to discover that he is the latest in a long line of royal consorts. Angrily, he joins the rebellion, vowing to topple the monarchy (but promising that Catherine will remain unharmed)...

Adolphe Menjou, a favorite of Lubitsch's, has all the film's best scenes as a rakish chancellor. Based on a play by Lajos Biro and Melchoir Lengyel, Forbidden Paradise was remade in 1945 as A Royal Scandal, with Tallulah Bankhead as Catherine; the 1945 film was produced by Ernst Lubitsch, who fell ill during shooting and was forced to relinquish the directorial responsibilities to Otto Preminger. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Description: article by the original uploader unknown@kg:
The First in the 13 part series. This wonderful documentary is required viewing for anyone who loves Silent cinema. Taken from VHS tapes, these episodes are all a bit soft and dull in color.
Review from IMDb:
Here is the definitive video history of the art of the American silent film. This 13-episode documentary was literally produced in the nick of time, as many of those interviewed would be deceased in a few short years - their wonderful memories lost forever.
Produced in 1980 for Thames Television, this is certainly one of the crowning achievements of the British team of Kevin Brownlow & David Gill, who together have done so much to preserve not only the history of silent cinema, but also the actual films themselves.
The one great lesson of the series is that non-talking films were a distinct art form, complete & satisfying, which had developed a universal language, understood everywhere, through the perfected medium of mime. This was all swept away with the arrival of Talk. So complete was the dismissal of silent films (which were never really silent) that within a short period of time they would be disparaged as intrinsically valueless & technically inferior.
As HOLLYWOOD triumphantly shows, nothing could have been further from the truth. Films of enormous expertise & intense emotional impact were almost routinely created by the pioneers who were perfecting their new invention. The achievements of Silent Cinema's 35 years constitute a new cultural renaissance.
Episodes focus on such topics as Westerns, comedies, war films, stunts, camera techniques & scandals. Not only do we hear from such luminaries as Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. & even John Wayne, but we are also enchanted by the recollections of Viola Dana, Leatrice Joy, Bessie Love, Colleen Moore & Blanche Sweet, performers in danger of obscurement due to the fact that their careers were so very long ago and their films are largely unavailable or lost. Hearing Miss Dana discuss the death of the stunt pilot she loved, or Miss Joy recollecting a tender note from husband John Gilbert, or Miss Moore hilariously describing her voice lessons when talkies arrived, is to inculcate real human personalities into what would otherwise be only historical footnotes.
A parade of directors, cameramen, stunt men & theater musicians also reminisce, as do writer Adela Rogers St. Johns & choreographer Agnes de Mille, who between them seem to have been everywhere & known everyone. Even Lord Louis Mountbatten recalls his memories of halcyon days at Pickfair.
While some fans may not want to have all the mysteries revealed as to how Douglas Fairbanks & Harold Lloyd achieved some of their most famous stunts, it is still fascinating information and detracts not a whit from the stars' prestige. It is rather sad, however, to see such stars as John Gilbert, Roscoe Arbuckle, James Murray & Ramon Novarro in their prime, with the knowledge of what Fate had in store for them...
Fans of HOLLYWOOD will be pleased to know that in the decades that have passed since its production many of the silent films it highlights have been fully restored and show now to much greater advantage that the rather faded appearance they make in the documentary.
Much appreciation must go to two men whose contributions go very far in contributing to the success of the series. Carl Davis provides a wonderfully evocative score for HOLLYWOOD, his use of traditional tunes & his own lilting melodies a splendid match for what is taking place on screen. James Mason's narration is absolutely perfect - his rich voice, so warm & intimate, ironically proving that there is a place for talking pictures after all.

The symbol of the unconquered (Oscar Micheaux, 1920) DVDRip VO inglés [TCM restoration]

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139632
Plot: In this silent film, a black heiress fights off the Ku Klux Klan to save her land.

This early-black cinema silent was produced and directed by the era's most prolific African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. Iris Hall played Evon Mason, "a beautiful Negress" travelling West to inspect her inheritance, a gold mine. She is thrown out of the area's only hotel but is cared for by a black prospector (Lawrence Chenault), whose life she later saves. Racism rarely reared its ugly head in Micheaux's films, at least not directly. It is therefore noteworthy that Symbol of the Unconquered contains a scene wherein the protagonist is barred from an all-white hotel, a situation all too familiar to the film's African-American target audience. Symbol of the Unconquered also featured Walker Thompson, E.G. Tatum, Jim Burris, Mattie Wilkes, and Leigh Whipper. The latter, the first black member of Actors Equity and the founder of the Negro Actors Guild, was a highly regarded Broadway actor whose best remembered screen role was that of Crooks in Lewis Milestone's Of Mice and Men (1939). ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

Though missing some footage in its remaining prints, The Symbol of the Unconquered is an immensely powerful work about a black woman in the Northwest who claims the land left to her by her deceased grandfather. Tensions come to a head when oil is discovered and plans are made to drive the local black homesteaders off their properties. Using elements from his novel The Homesteader, Micheaux here analyzes the complex workings of race, class, and economics behind the violent clashes in Rosewood, Fla., and elsewhere. Print courtesy of the Museum of Modern Art. Live musical accompaniment by Carolyn Swartz.

Description:
Image, beauty and ageing are also themes in Smouldering Fires, which is again concerned with the relationship between two sisters. Pauline Frederick plays Jane Vale, a tough businesswoman who falls in love with and marries younger man Bobby, only to lose him to her teenage sister (La Plante). Depicted in the early scenes as 'mannish' and interested only in work, Jane finds her outlook changes when she meets Bobby: although she has challenged society's taboos throughout her career for instance, by becoming the boss of a large corporation by falling in love she proves herself to be a 'real' woman. But that her love object is a younger man in fact transforms her from a figure of authority into an object of ridicule and pity.
As Jane struggles to retain her husband, Brown shows the desperate methods she employs to recapture her youth. In depicting her submission to costly (and ineffective) beauty treatments, he encourages us to empathise with her and question the validity of the image she's striving to attain. These scenes were cut from American release prints, suggesting their oblique criticism of Hollywood's obsession with youth and beauty was too close to the bone. And the film's ending implies that in order to exist in this image-driven society, Jane must abandon her love for Bobby and return to the workplace; she cannot exert both economic power and female sexual desire.
Although some contemporary reviewers read Smouldering Fires as a satire on the independent older woman, the film is sensitive in its representation of desire and femininity and anticipates the later 'women's films' of such directors as George Cukor, Douglas Sirk and King Vidor. As Allen Estrin has noted: "For Brown it is truly a grim world for an intellectual and free-spirited woman who seeks to live her own life." (www.bfi.org.uk)
