My rip of a DVDR from a collector, my custom subs. I de-interlaced the DVDR and tried to normalize the audio but didn't succeed, so I left the original ac3 which is a far too low. A TVrip from the West German channel N III, the logo occasionally props up.
A gripping film with a complicated story, all the characters have their past history, parallel running plots are very often intercut, very tight and laconic editing, not a second of superfluous or even explanatory footage, most definitely subtitling material.
So the marriage swindler or con artist, played by Paulsen, is released from prison in the first scene, ahead of time, because of good conduct. The prison director even politely asks him if he has any complaints against the prison management or suggestions for improvement to make. Then, like an evil spirit, he descends upon the hamlet of Klein Wustrow (near Berlin), and starts to spin his intrigues. An avenging angel, played by Elisabeth Flickenschild, also takes the train to Klein Wustrow. A lot of the scenes revolve around the local train station, trains, railway officials, the village bum, a hospitable widow - you're deeply immersed in the life in the German provinces of the mid 30s. Not a bit of propaganda. One of those little B pictures, a jewel.
