Note on the Italian transcription

Most of this transcription was done by one Andrew Vaniscak in 1933. His translation (which I haven't seen) was then used for the premiere of Figaro e la Sua Giornata in New York where it was positively reviewed by Mordaunt Hall in the NY Times. Vaniscak's transcription done by ear, without the aid of technology, contained errors and left certain parts of the film untranscribed. I filled in the gaps, made some corrections and sent it over to Edam, who kindly proofed it.
Though due to the DVD's poor audio, some words here and there could not be caught. These have been marked with a ??? in the srt.

A huge thanks to both of them for making this possible. :kissing2:

Note on the English translation.

Around 57:14 Becco. Becco means beak and eupehmistically mouth in Italian, but it also means cuckold. Unfortunately, impossible to render it justice in English.

Note on the DVD Source

The DVD source is poor in places audiowise involving some dropout and hard to hear dialogue. Interestingly enough, the original transcription contains dialogue not found on the DVD, suggesting some film loss as well.

Notes on the Film, Cast and Crew

Figaro e la sua Gran Giornata is an adaption of Arnaldo Fraccaroli's 1907, Ostrega, Che Sbrego! (which Marcia Landry translates as "Oh, What Fun!"), a popular comedy still acted today on the Italian stage. Though with Basoto's mentioning of having known Rossini, it probably transpires 30 or 40 years earlier. This was Camerini's first sound film after a promising career in the latter silent years making films such as "Kif Tebbi" and "Rotaie", it was a critical and public success.

Tomaso Smith, credited with the screenplay, was a busy writer during the Ventennio known for such work as Lorenzino de Medici, Cavalleria Rusticana and Il Re Si Diverte. This was his first film.

The film's stirring music, was done by well known composer Felice Lattuada (father of director Alberto). This was the first of only nine scores he created for cinema.

Among the assistant directors, Raffaello Matarazzo and Mario Soldati need no introduction, though it is interesting to note Matarazzo's excellent Treno Popolare appeared two years later. Giuseppe Fatigati (also the film's editor), was a prolific editor and production designer throughout the 30s and 40s, with an occasional stab at directing (I uploaded his Benjamino Gilgli vehicle, I Pagliacci last year).

Cinematography was done by Massimo Terzano (who had been working in films since 1915) and production design by the prolific, Gastone Medin and Ivo Perilli. Perilli who is more celebrated as a writer would achieve some notoriety in 1933 when his film, Ragazzo (Boy) was banned by the Fascist regime at the instigation of Mussolini himself.

Gianfranco Giachetti (older brother of the more famouse Fosco), was an established stage actor (he's referred to as Commendatore in the credits). His Cavaliere Basoto, both vain and pompous, charming and endearing is a wonderfully realized performance and may be the epitome of his screen career. Figaro e la Sua Gran Giornata was his first film and he made 13 more before his death in 1936 at the age of 48 including Vecchia Guardia, 1864 and Aldebaran.

Leda Gloria (Nina) may need no introduction as she (with Isa Pola) was one of the leading ingenues of early Italian sound cinema. Despite her limited range, she displays a fresh sweetness here that is appealing. She managed to weather the loss of youth by maturing into wife roles most notably that of Gino Gervi's Peppone's better half in the Don Camillo films.

Ugo Cesiri, the excellent ubiquitous portly Ventennio actor, also makes his film debut here, playing Rantoloni, the impresario (of which Edam assures me means "big wheezer" in Italian). He would appear in over 40 films before his death in 1941 at the age of 47. Some of his work on the tracker include Ma Non è una Cosa Seria, La Contessa di Parma and Retroscena.

Maurizio D'Ancora was only 19 when he played Chiodini in Figaro e la Sua Gran Giornata, having previously appeared in the lead role for Camerini's Rotaie. His jealousy drives the plot, though I think contemporary audiences would have found his antics much more sympathetic than modern ones today. D'Ancora, whose real name was Rodolfo Gucci, retired after making over 40 films in 1946 to focus on his family's famous fashion trade.

Gemma Schirato, another debutante, made only a handful of film in the 30s (particularly with Camerini); her restrained pefrormance is quite effective in its realism.

Alfredo Martinelli, who plays the thin bass, had a long career that lasted up to the 1960s, though he probably is best remembered as the young, effeminate man whom Emilio Ghione befriends in I Topi Grigi.

Giuseppe Gambardella, who plays the fat bass, had an interesting career: one of Italy's comic clowns since 1909, he was known as "Checco" and made nearly 120 films (mainly shorts) working with Robinet, Lea Guinci, Polidor and others, as well as starring in his own shorts. He also appeared in serious films (usually as comic relief) most notably Guazzoni's Quo Vadis. Anybody who has watched early Italian silents will recognize him as his bald obese presence seems ageless.

Augusto Bandini, who plays the conductor Sansuga, was mainly a supporting actor who did land some important roles in films like Addio, Giovinezza! and Prix de Beauté, usually as nerdy best friends.

Umberto Sacripante who plays Gedeone and Olga Capri, who plays Caterina, should be well known to anybody who has watched any of Blasetti's films of the 30s (and 40s) as they are almost omnipresent, usually as comic relief.

Umberto Cocchi, who plays the bullying baritone Cafuro, is probably best known for playing big burly brothers who threaten to kill the lovers of their unmarried sisters (as he does in Genina and Gallone's Il Corsaro and Di Benedetti's La Grazia). There has been some confusion with this actor in this film as both IMDB and Wikipedia list him as playing the slight, superannuated dandy, Felicetti, the pharmacist. To make matters worse he is misnamed as Uberto and Ubaldo. (Though now who played Felicetti is a mystery!)

Achille Majeroni (sometimes spelled Maieroni) who plays Nina's irate father, is probably best known as the aging actor who hits on Leopoldo Trieste in I Vitelloni but he had a long career both as a supporting actor (since 1913) and a voice double. His last film was Ferreri's La Donna Scimmia.

This was the only film of Angelo Parigi who plays the tenor Pancrazi. Nothing else about him could be found out about him, but due to his good voice, I suspect he was a professional singer.

Gino Viotti, who plays the Mayor, made many films in the Ventennio, usually playing figures of authority. He was memorable as the venal mayor in Blasetti's Vecchia Guardia.

Raimondo VanRiel, who plays the Deputy, was another prolific supporting actor both in silent and sound films. He did the make up for this film as well. His last film was William Wyler's Ben Hur.
