Argumento: Fang Gang, discipulo de la escuela del maestro Qi Rufeng pierde el brazo derecho y está a punto de perder la vida. Le salva Hsiao Man, una campesina que se enamora de él. Fang Gang consagrará su vida al aprendizaje de las técnicas marciales del brazo izquierdo por medio de un manual secreto. Gracias a ello, una vez convertido en un guerrero terrible, volverá a la escuela de Qi para salvarla del desastre.

Probablemente la primera obra maestra del wuxia. Wikipedia: Género cinematográfico que se originó en Taiwán y Hong Kong. Las características que lo distinguen son un escenario histórico, escenas de acción centradas en la lucha con espadas, énfasis en el melodrama y temas de vínculo, amistad, lealtad y traición. Este género se considera ligeramente diferente al cine de artes marciales. Existe un fuerte vínculo entre el cine wuxia y las novelas wuxia. Muchas de las películas se basan en esas novelas.
Por cierto, si tienes fundadas reservas hacia el cine de mamporros de Hong Kong, ésta poco o nada tiene que ver. Es una muy buena película y logra un perfecto equilibrio entre desarrollo de personajes, secuencias de acción y hallazgos visuales. Recomendable para todos los amantes del cine de género. Originó numerosas imitaciones y secuelas menos efectivas.

Leaving even King Hu’s COME DRINK WITH ME behind, Chang Cheh’s THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN is the most significant wuxia film in Hong Kong film history. In a single stroke, Chang reasserted the male lead in a genre dominated by women and established a new and brutal level of violence inspired by Japanese chambara and the films of Sam Pechinpah.
