SINOPSIS: Hannes Kröger, antiguo marinero al que la vida ha defraudado, canta todas las noches en un cabaré hamburgués de mala muerte llamado la “Gran Libertad”. En el lecho de muerte su hermano le confía a su antigua amante. La joven va conquistando poco a poco el corazón de Hannes. Él le dedica la canción “La Paloma” y empieza a soñar con compartir la vida con ella. Pero Gisa no se entera en absoluto de la situación y sale a menudo con el estibador Willem...

Found on emule. The film's title is the nightclub's address in Hamburg's red-light district, but the close-up of the street sign at the end of the film was also understood as a message at the time, particularly infuriating for Goebbels. Of course the film is such an organic unity that the censor could do nothing but ban the whole film.

Plot: The four-mast boat, the Padua, sails into Hamburg's harbor. Jens, Fiete and Karl go on land to visit their friend Hannes, one of the their former colleagues aboard the Padua. Hannes now works as a singer at the famous Hamburg Hippodrom. Just as the four friends are celebrating their reunion, Hannes receives a call that his brother is in the hostipal dying. Feeling a sense of obligation, Hannes takes over the responsibility for looking after his brother's ex-girlfriend Gisa. Feeling an attraction to Hannes, she moves in with him, but Hannes only sees her as the girl his brother left behind. When Gisa starts dating someone else, Hannes becomes jealous and finally notices his own attraction to her. Jens and Fiete try to convince him to join them once again aboard the Padua. Faced with his realization, Hannes has to make a decision...

Quote: In this poignant tale of Hamburg's Saint Pauli district, a former seaman, now a singer in a sailor's nightclub, opposes his girl's love for a dockworker. Directed by Helmut Kaeutner in 1943/44, this film enjoyed enormous postwar popularity in East and West Germany. Kaeutner makes a stunning use of the new Agfacolor material, and Hamburg never looked more mystical. The film was shot on location and Berlin, but after the air raids in both cities, completed in Prague. Goebbles didn't particularly like this film and didn't allow it to be shown in the Reich. Therefore, German audiences only got to see this movie after 1945. Hans Albers is brilliant, and for fans of him this movie is an absolute must. I personally must have seen this one 8 or 9 times already. The movie also features a couple of good songs, sung by Hans Albers. "La Paloma" is probably the most remembered tune of this film.

Maravilloso film melodramático de un gran director. El color de este film me llama mucho la atención, no se parece en nada a los colorines de los primeros films americanos en color con excepción del notable "Lo que el viento se llevó". La trágica época en que se rodó, con Alemania perdiendo la guerra ya, y tantas y tantas brutalidades y crímenes, de los alemanes y de los aliados también, creo que lastró su grandeza. El film nació fuera de época, porque se entiende que mientras las SS hacían de las suyas, queda extraño rodar un film de amor. Son los daños colaterales que sufren los artistas. Pero el film es grandioso.
