Es el comienzo de los años 30 en un instituto escuela de élite Berlín alta. Los círculos más altos de estudiantes aferrarse a un ideal conservador de la moral y el honor. Cuando el contratista Haller se ve en la cárcel por fraude, su hijo Erich es boicoteado por sus compañeros de clase. El más radical de ellos, Herbert von Pahl, dice a Erich que si estuviera en su posición, él se suicidaría. Cuando se descubre que el padre de Herbert también estuvo implicado en el fraude, el joven cumple su amenaza. El inestable Erich intenta superar la situación, pero recoge desprecio y cinismo ... incluso en su propia familia. Sólo su profesor puede impedir que mate a sí mismo, también.

A film about the pupils of a posh Berlin gymnasium in their final term (Ober-Primaner = pupils of the Upper First) and their class teacher/mentor/confessor teaching them about humanism and tolerance, a lesson that would be badly needed three years later. The teacher is this time not played by Jannings but by the equally great Theodor Loos. The illustrious father of one pupil is imprisoned because of embezzlement, the boy's step-mother remains quite unmoved, the rest of the plot can be guessed from the screenshots.
